INTRODUCTION
Today, automotive OEMs face a difficult challenge; capturing
innovation from their suppliers and ensuring product differentiation; while
keeping costs and schedule within reasonable margins. Medius and its
partners represent a paradigm shift in the process referred to as
“innovation capture”. Our team is tightly focused on rapidly delivering high
quality, cost effective solutions (innovation) to the OEM. Our expertise is
based on experiences in developing systems with mission critical
requirements for safety. Medius was designed to bridge Defense and
Automotive industries and deliver innovation and solutions through
technology transfer, license and integration services in partnership with
the industry.
ABOUT MEDIUS
Medius, Inc. is a
privately funded company headquartered in Seattle, Washington, and are
planning a
support office in Detroit, Michigan in 2007. The company was founded in November
2000 by successful and experienced leaders in technology assessment and
large-scale system integration and execution. Medius' technology team
includes experts in the areas of technology transfer, sensor fusion,
navigation, image recognition, communications, and automotive systems.
Medius and its
new partners are leading suppliers for technologically advanced electronic
systems, committed to providing its customers with innovative systems
solutions to improve vehicle safety and convenience. Medius is creating the
products that will shape the future of driving. By developing new
technologies, by applying those technologies to the ways people interact
with their vehicles, we are enabling a new driving experience. An experience
that will ensure passengers and drivers are safe, secure, better informed
and more comfortable. Medius identifies problems in current or “near”
generation features and solves them rapidly and cost effectively with
technologies and expertise from inside as well as outside the automotive
industry. Medius has secured significant industry partnerships that have
vast affordable resources and technologies.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dan
Preston, Chairman, President and
CEO of Medius, has more than twenty-five years leading large-scale
environmental, defense, and energy technology integration projects. He has
successfully founded six technology companies. Most recently, he was
founding Chairman, President, and CEO of Integrated Data Communications (Airbiquity).
Under Dan's Leadership IDC was selected as one of Fortune Magazines
"Cool Companies" in 1999 and later recognized as one of the top 25
companies in the Northwest by the Investment Forum.
Dr. Paul
Carlson, is President and CEO of the Carlson Group of
Companies in Tacoma, Washington and a co-founder of several other
high-technology firms. Dr. Carlson is a consultant to Lucent Technologies in
New Jersey and Dallas, Cascade Microtech, Inc., in Portland, Oregon and the
Frank Russell Company in Tacoma. Other consulting activities have been in
business reengineering and restructuring projects in Saudi Arabia; Lucent
Power Systems; AT&T Microelectronics; Cascade Microtech, Inc.; Atcall, Inc.,
as well as development in other startup and early-stage development
companies. He has also been a part of joint venture initiatives for
municipal telecommunication expansions, community economic development
projects, among others. Current telecommunication infrastructure development
contracts are with the City of Richland and the City of Ellensburg in
Washington.
Prior to becoming a
consultant, Dr. Carlson was Vice President, Strategy and Business
Development, at Honeywell, Inc. from 1988 to 1991. Between 1977 and 1988 he
was President and CEO of Oregon Graduate Center, where he also founded OGI
Telecomm, a shared tenant service provider (STS). He has served on the
boards of numerous high technology and Fortune 500 companies including Frank
Russell Trust Company, Tektronix, PacifiCorp, Logic Automation (Synopsis),
and Cascade Microtech, Inc., Barrett Enclosures, Inc., Atcall, Inc.,
Simutech, LLC.,and Integrated Data Communications (IDC), Inc
Ron Weilert, Graduated US Air Force
Academy 1971; BS in Engineering Management; Program Control Officer, RPV/Cruise
Missile Program Office, 1974-1976; Program Control Officer, NAVSTAR GPS
Program Office, 1976-1977. Oracle Corp, final position, VP Manufacturing
Applications, 1984-1994, top sales person and manager several times,
employee of the year 1986. Baan Corp, President & CEO, responsible for
all sales and marketing systems world wide, and all personnel in western
hemisphere. 1994-1996. President of Weilert Properties & Development,
1985 to present.
Dr.
Dennis Wilkie, is an accomplished senior executive with an unusual mix
of both automotive OEM and component supplier perspective garnered through
operating assignments in Ford Motor Company and Motorola, Inc. Dennis began
his career with Ford Motor Company in the late 1960’s as a research
engineer. During his 28 years with Ford he held various key positions in the
Electrical and Electronics Division, was General Manager of Ford’s Glass
Division, and was Director of Electric Vehicle Programs. He concluded his
career with Ford as Vice President of Ford’s Business Development Office.
In 1996, Dennis joined Motorola as Vice President and Director, Autobody and
Industrial Products for their Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group.
During his six year tenure with Motorola he also served as Vice President
and Director of Strategy and New Business Development for the Automotive and
Industrial Electronics Group, Corporate Vice President and Director,
Business Development, Quality and Staff Operations, Integrated Electronic
Systems Sector and ultimately became the Corporate Vice President and Chief
of Staff for the Integrated Electronic Systems Sector. He retired in March,
2002.
Dennis earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
from Wayne State University, a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and as
a Sloan Fellow obtained an M.S.M. from MIT. In 1994 he was awarded the
Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award by Wayne State University.
ADVISORY BOARD
General Tony
McPeak, General Merrill A. McPeak was chief of staff of the U.S. Air
Force, Washington, D.C. As chief, he served as the senior uniformed Air
Force officer responsible for the organization, training and equipage of a
combined active duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian force of over 850,000
people serving at approximately 1,300 locations in the United States and
overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he and the other service
chiefs function as military advisers to the secretary of defense, National
Security Council and the president.
The general entered the Air
Force in 1957 as a distinguished graduate of the San Diego State College
ROTC program. He has commanded an Air Force wing, a numbered Air Force and,
before becoming Air Force chief of staff, commanded the Pacific Air Forces,
a major command. He is a command pilot, having flown more than 6,000 hours,
principally in fighter aircraft. He flew two years as a solo pilot for the
elite aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds, and flew as an attack
pilot and high-speed forward air controller in Vietnam.
Dr.
Jon Root, Major General Jon Root has more than thirty years
in operational leadership roles in the military, higher education and
business. He directed development of the Oregon University System Distance
Education Program and was instrumental in establishing and scaling new
technology systems for distance course delivery. Dr. Root is retired Army
Reserve where he held the rank of Major General and served as the Commanding
General of the 104th Division. Robert Oswald,
former Senior Vice-President of Ford, former Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of Bosch North America, and currently CEO of Bendix Commercial
Dr. William T.
Weyerhaeuser, former chairman of Comerco, Inc. and Rock Island Company
and current director and chairman of the board of Columbia Bank, and current
chairman of the board of EDEN Bioscience Corporation
Robert Fong, Senior Client Partner with Korn/Ferry International and a former co-founder of Leadership Venture Partners, and former Managing Director Korn/Ferry
International
David Marsing,
former Vice President, Technology and Manufacturing Group, and Director,
Intel Communications Group Manufacturing. Led Intel Communication Group's (ICG)
worldwide production and manufacturing operations through both internal and
external factories and was responsible for ICG's external foundry strategy
Dr. Jim
Stuart, International consultant specializing in advanced commercial
space systems. Previous positions include President of IOSTAR Corp; V.P. and
Chief Architect at Teledesic Corp., Chief Scientist/Engineer at Ball
Aerospace. He was the founding Chief Engineer of Orbital Sciences Corp; and
Project Manager at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for two missions. Dr.
Stuart holds a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering; M.S. in Operations Research,
and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern
California, and a B.S. in Physics from the University of Washington. He has
received NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal and authored two text books and
more than 150 professional papers.
David
Robin, fourteen years at Texas
Instruments, he served on the Strategic Leadership Team whose success is
highlighted in the Jon R. Katzenbach book, "Teams at the Top"
(Harvard Business School Press, 1998)
Roger
Collis, Director Corporate Development. Roger is the former President and CEO of Pacific Rim Enterprise Center, founding board
member Integrated Data Communications (IDC), founding board member Medius
Inc, appointee, Washington Department of Trade and Economic Development.
Bengt Svensson has more than 30 years of management and executive experience in the US and in Sweden. Recent experiences includes General Manager Siemens Cardiac Pacemaker division, now part of St Jude Medical, CEO Arctec AB Sweden, an electronics assembly plant now part of
Sanmina-SCI, and Senior VP Project Office at SeaMed Corp, Redmond WA , a major contract design and manufacturing company now part of Plexus.
Micah Stolowitz, Micah is
currently a general partner at Stolowitz Ford Cowger, LLP, Portland Oregon.
Micah was recently a partner at Stoel Rives
LLP, Portland, Oregon where he heads the patent practice group and works
with both established and emerging companies in a wide range of electronics,
communications, semiconductor, and software technologies. He has served as
an expert witness and as a “Special Master” – a neutral person appointed by
the federal court to assist the judge in complex patent infringement
litigation. Micah is a former president of the Oregon Patent Law
Association, is also an adjunct professor of law, teaching patent law and
litigation. He also has a B.S degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science (with honors) from the University California, Berkeley.
MANAGEMENT TEAM
Joseph
Preston, VP Technology and CTO. Joe was co-founder of
Airbiquity in 1997 and co-inventor of the key technologies that were
deployed in the GM-OnStar program. Joe leads the technology programs
at Medius and has responsibility for our patent portfolio and its growth.
Tom Cox,
Chief Engineer, Tom has over 30 years of experience building products for
safety-critical embedded-systems applications for the aerospace, factory
automation, and medical instrumentation markets. He has PMP certification
from the Project Management Institute. Tom has led numerous teams through
all phases of product development, and performed software audits for FDA
review in preparation for medical product certification. Tom was an
independent consultant prior to joining Medius to lead the Engineering team.
